기존의 정발제들은 대부분 고분자 물질을 이용하여 모발에 고정력을 형성하는 화장품으로서 예를 들면, 헤어스프레이, 무스, 젤 및 왁스 등이 있다. 상기 고분자 물질로는 피롤리돈, 아크릴산 및 아크릴레이트 등의 세팅제를 단독 또는 이의 공중합체 형태로 사용할 수 있으며, 이러한 고분자 물질들은 초기 사용 시 용매가 증발한 후 필름 형성을 통해 모발에 부착되며 이 필름이 모발에 고정력을 형성하여 원하는 스타일을 만든다. 이러한 세팅제는 고온, 고습상태에서는 고유의 필름 특성을 잃어버리게 되어 시간이 지나면서 모발에서의 고정력이 저하되는 단점을 보이고 있다. 이에 대한 해결 방안으로서 상기 고분자 물질들에서 내습성이 우수한 단량체 와의 공중합을 통해 고정력 저하에 관한 문제를 해결하고자 하였다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 얻어진 대표적인 내습성이 우수한 세팅제로는 폴리피롤리돈/비닐아세테이트 공중합체가 있으며, 시판품으로는 BASF사의 Luviskol VA64가 있다. 그러나 상기의 공중합체도 만족할 만한 성능을 나타내지 못하고 있는 실정이다.Existing stabilizers are mostly cosmetic products that form a fixing force on hair using a polymer material, such as hair spray, mousse, gel and wax.
