폐타이어의 재활용은 크게 열이용, 원형 이용, 분말가공 이용의 세가지로 분류할 수 있다. 이중에서 분말가공은 폐타이어를 분쇄하여 분말화 한 후 사용하는것으로서, 그 적용 분야가 상당히 광범위하다. 폐타이어 고무 분말의 특성을 향상시키고 보다 다양한 분야에 적용키 위해 폐타이어의 분쇄방법, 고무 분말의 표면처리, 탈황 방법 등에 관한 활발한 연구도 진행중이고, 고무 분말을 여러 분야에 적용한 결과도 보고되어 있다. 한편 이러한 고무 분말을 타이어용 고무 화합물에 적용하여 원가절감이나 환경문제의 해결에 기여하고자 하는 노력이 보다 미세한 입자 크기를 가지거나 특성이 향상된 고무 분말의 출현에 따라 더욱 심도 있게 진행되고 있다. 그러나 고무 분말을 적용하면 원 고무와의 상용성, 분산성, 계면에서의 접착력 결여 등에 의하여 배합된 고무의 기계적 물성이 하락하게 되는 문제점이 있다.The recycling of waste tires can be classified into three categories: heat use, prototype use, and powder use.
