Claims

1. A digital closed loop control system for use with an electrosurgical generator that delivers electrosurgical RF energy to a surgical site, comprising:
a feedback system for continuously monitoring an electrical characteristic of the delivered RF energy to the surgical site as a surgical condition and generating a digital RF signal related thereto;
a microcontroller configured with a variable gain factor to adjust and control the delivered RF energy across a plurality of RF resolution adjustment values and a plurality of RF adjustment modes in response to the generated digital RF signal from the feedback system to provide an optimal RF output for a surgical procedure under all surgical, operating, or procedural conditions;

the microcontroller is further configured to calculate a variable gain factor for each of the plurality of RF tuning modes and select one of the calculated variable gain factors based on a respective error value calculated for each of the plurality of RF tuning modes;
the variable gain factor is selected based on a maximum positive error value;
1. A digital closed loop control system comprising:

the individual error values being calculated by subtracting desired voltage, current and power setpoints from the measured magnitudes of the delivered RF energy voltage, current and power;

The digital closed loop control system of claim 1, characterized in that the feedback system has a plurality of channels, and the feedback system is configured to measure the electrical property of the delivered RF energy through at least one of the plurality of channels, generate data representative of the measured electrical property, and digitally transmit the data to the microcontroller.

The digital closed loop control system of claim 3, wherein the microcontroller is configured to receive the data and perform calculations related thereto to obtain measured magnitudes of the voltage, current, and power of the delivered RF energy.

The digital closed loop control system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of RF resolution adjustment values include a low voltage setting value, a medium voltage setting value, and a high voltage setting value.

The digital closed loop control system of claim 6, wherein for each RF resolution adjustment value, the multiple RF adjustment modes include at least one of a voltage adjustment mode, a current adjustment mode, and a power adjustment mode.

7. The digital closed loop control system of claim 6, wherein the low voltage settings include output RF energies up to 10V and 100mV, the medium voltage settings include RF output energies up to 150V or 8A, and the high voltage settings include RF output energies up to 300V or 4A.

The microcontroller includes a primary fully programmable gate array (FPGA) and a primary processor;
the primary processor is configured to establish desired RF power values for each of the plurality of RF resolution adjustment values and the plurality of RF adjustment modes, the desired RF power values being desired voltage, current and power settings;

The digital closed loop control system of claim 1, wherein the microcontroller is configured to provide a variable integral control system for determining the RF output of the buck circuit and H-bridge circuit of the RF amplifier.

The digital closed loop control system of claim 12, wherein the microcontroller is configured to use a desired RF output value and a calculated tissue impedance load to drive a duty cycle value for the buck circuit of the RF amplifier.

The digital closed loop control system of claim 12, wherein the microcontroller is configured to drive a duty cycle value for the H-bridge circuit of the RF amplifier using an integrated signal generated by integrating the calculated individual error values for a selected RF tuning mode and multiplying them by the selected variable gain factor.

The digital closed loop control system of claim 2, wherein each of the plurality of channels of the feedback system includes a front-end circuit for measuring an electrical property of the delivered RF energy, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for digitizing the electrical property of the delivered RF energy, and driving a digital RF signal related to the measured electrical property of the delivered RF energy.
