Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled connecting and retaining metal fittings capable of carrying out melting operation between preform for optical fiber and glass dummy rod in high precision and good workability, by providing means for stopping slipping-out of the dummy rod between the dummy rod melting to upper end of preform for optical fiber and connecting part inserting to upper end of the dummy rod. CONSTITUTION:An inserting convex part 14 projected at the lower end of a tubular connecting rod 13 is closely inserted in the upper part of the glass dummy rod 12 coaxially and integrally melting a preform 11 for optical fiber at the lower end. An inserting hollow part 15 retaining the rod 13 coaxially to the rod 13 is formed. A pin 16 for stopping slipping-out crossing the inserting convex part 14 and inserting hollow part 15 is detachably hit and installed to the rod 12 and rod 13. According to the above-mentioned method, workability for melting and connecting the preform 11 is improved, because the rod can be shortened. It is not required to constitute the connecting and retaining jig with only expensive quartz glass, etc., and advantageous also in cost, because a metallic rod relatively reduced in heat resistance can be used as the rod 13 without any hindrance.
