Abstract

1465493 Fusing glass fibres DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 29 April 1974 [30 May 1973] 25861/73 Heading C1M To fuse together glass fibres at the ends of optical glass fibre bundles to a predetermined size and shape, the end of the bundle 12 is inserted into a tapering hole 3 in a jig 10 which is heated as by a heating coil 5 to fusing temperature, monitored by a temperature probe 6 near the narrow end of hole 3, the hole tapering to the required size and shape so that the fibres of the bundle 12 are fused together. The jig 10 may be of graphite, ceramic or unfused silica but is preferably of pyrophyllite. A glass tunnel 9 may be used to guide the bundle 12, the fibres of which are preferably of lead glass with cladding of a lower refractive index glass. Alternatively, the cladding at the ends of the fibres may be removed and the bundle 12 inserted into a tubular sleeve of the cladding material, the whole of which is then inserted into the hole 3. When graphite is used for the jig, the whole apparatus may be surrounded by an inert gas such as nitrogen. Co-pending Patent Application No. 24997/73 is referred to.
