Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce cutting of fiber by tension during burning and enable production of a continuous quartz glass fiber having high strength, by storing gel-like fiber for a specific term after forming the fiber in production of quartz glass fiber by burning gel-like fiber. CONSTITUTION:A solution of silicoalkoxide is hydrolyzed and a gel-like fiber is formed from the solution in gelation reaction. After the gel-like fiber is formed, the fiber is stored for 1hr-10 days and then burned. Since the gel-like fiber which is porous silica gel formed from the above-mentioned solution is hydrolyzed in reaction with water content in atmosphere and further subjected to polymerization by the above-mentioned storage, strength and density thereof is gradually raised. The effect is hardly exhibited in storage within 1hr and when the storage term exceed 10 days, organic substance in the gel-like fiber is not completely gone in burning or filament arrangement between plural numbers of single fibers constituting gel-like fiber sometimes gets worse, because the density becomes too large.
