Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having stable characteristics over a long period of time and an extremely low loss by executing optimization designing with respect to a bending loss, intrinsic loss, hydrogen resistance and radiation characteristics in a 1.55mum wavelength band where the light loss of a quartz optical fiber is minimized. CONSTITUTION:This optical fiber is constituted in the following manner: The mode field diameter 2W of LP01 which is the basic mode of the optical fiber is 9.5mum<=2W<=11.5mum in the 1.55mum band which is the usable wavelength band, the effective cutoff wavelength lambdace of LP11 which is a higher mode of 1st order is 1.35mum<=lambdace<=1.60mum and the hydrogen resistance characteristic is enhanced by consisting the core of pure quartz or the quartz doped with a slight amt. of germanium and doping fluorine to the clad. This single mode optical fiber is subjected to the optimization designing in the 1.55mum wavelength band where the light loss of the quartz optical fiber is minimized so as to have the extremely low loss and the characteristics stable over a long period of time. The junction distance can be greatly expanded to >=2 times as compared to the conventional 1.3mum band.
