Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain proper flexibility, rigidity, and excellent oxidation resistance, in composite graphite sheet materials such as valve seats and gaskets, by converting a part or the whole of the surface of an expanded graphite sheet into silicon carbide. CONSTITUTION:An expanded graphite sheet material is molded, and the compact having been obtained is closedly put into a vessel of the same graphite so as not to be brought into contact with approximately 1kg of the mixed compact of silicon powder and silicon dioxide powder (mole ratio 1:1), and is heated at approximately 1800 deg.C while being kept at this temperature for one hour to obtain a sealed member 1. As a result of this treatment, the surface of expanded graphite 2 is converted into beta-type silicon carbide 3 to form the sealed member 1 consisting of composite graphite sheet material. Thus, the surface layer of silicon carbide which is capable of being used even in a high temperature air exceeding approximately 800 deg.C and also is capable of being prevented from seizure can be obtained, and further residual surfur compound and chlorine compound are completely removed by the high temperature at the time of conversion treatment, so that the corrosion of machineries can be prevented.
