Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sliding material having high resistance to slurry, a high PV value and excellent abrasion resistance and being safe from a sanitary viewpoint, by mixing a fluorine-containing resin, carbon fiber and metal powder, pressure- molding the resulting mixture and setting the molded product by baking.
CONSTITUTION: There are mixed the following three components: 6wt% carbon fiber, 4wt% powder of a metal such as Cu or Sb and the balance a fluorine-containing resin. The resulting mixture is premolded at a compressive pressure of 150W500kg/cm2, then heated to about 380°C over a period of 5W10hr and baked for 3W10hr. Then, the baked product is cooled over a period of 5W10hr. In this way, there is obtained a sliding material which has excellent abrasion resistance, self-lubrication and a high PV value (viscosity under pressure), and which is useful as a sliding member for a seal ring of a mechanical seal or a lip material for oil seals. The sliding material can maintain high resistance to abrasion and slurry, because the metallic powders are not fallen off as they are supported in place by the entanglement in the carbon fiber. There is no need for use of materials having the possibility of environmental pollution such as asbestos, etc.
