Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a sharp picture with a good contrast ratio by turning on an illumination light emission part right after the selection timing of a picture element scanning electrode and then turning off the light emission part a predetermined time later. CONSTITUTION:A video signal from a TV receiver 1 is converted by a control circuit 2 into a segment signal and a scanning signal, which are supplied to a liquid crystal panel 3; and a synchronizing signal is separated and sent to an illumination scanning circuit 4. A lamp 51 which illuminates panel scanning electrodes T1-T44 is controlled with a signal L1 to illuminate right after select signals are outputted to the electrodes T1-T44 and turn off the predetermined time later. A lamp 52 also illuminates with a signal L2 right after select signals are outputted to electrodes T45-T88. Thus, a light state is obtained right after the selection timing and a dark state is obtained right before the timing to obtain an afterimage the moment when the contrast ratio is good, thereby obtaining the sharp picture.
