Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a stainless steel pipe material which is highly strengthened by subjecting a metastable austenitic stainless steel to pipe making, then transforming the structure to martensite by cooling treatment. CONSTITUTION:A flat plate made of metastable austenitic stainless steel such as SUS34 is bent in such a manner that many U-shaped sections are formed and thereafter, the plate is rounded to a pipe shape and is welded at the point x in the end part. This pipe is held for 10min in -80 deg.C dry ice to transform the structure to martensite. The projections are formed in the longitudinal direction of the pipe body in this case, by which the stainless steel pipe material having high strength and high rigidity is easily produced.
