PURPOSE:To obtain the solid-liquid separation device for primary treatment which has high SS-removing capacity and less trouble of clogging by providing a settling zone consisting of a space in the under part of a filter medium layer through which waste water is upwardly flowed. CONSTITUTION:The settling zone 4 consisting of a space is provided in the under part of the filter medium layer 3, and the influent water of waste water containing solid matter is introduced from an inlet pipe 1 into the settling zone 4 in which the matter of comparatively large specific gravity of the solids in the introduced water is settled and separated in the settling zone 4, and then, the introduced water containing the solids of small specific gravity is upwardly flowed through the filter medium layer 3 in which a secondary solid- liquid separation is carried out, and is discharged through the effluent pipe 5 as the treated water. The solids settled and separated in the settling zone 4 are intermittently or continuously discharged from a sludge discharge pipe 6 to the outside of the system.
