Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable production of a structural member of complicated shape for high temperature at low cost, attaching a metallic oxide to the inner face of open pores of sintered porous material of high-purity silicon carbide and burning. CONSTITUTION:A sintered porous material of high-purity silicon carbide is formed and a metallic oxide or a compound to form the metallic oxide is attached to the inner face of at least open pores of the sintered porous material. Then the sintered porous material is burnt and a coating film of oxide consisting of the metallic oxide and silicon oxide is formed to give the aimed structural member. The oxide coating film-forming material such as glass coating film-forming material requires introduction in a liquid phase such as solution or dispersion having 0.5-3.0 poise viscosity of the open pores under pressure. When viscosity of the coating film-forming solution is <0.5 poise, transfer by gravity occurs before the forming material is gelatinized after the introduction under pressure and unevenness of the distribution of the forming material is produced. On the contrary, when the viscosity exceeds 3.0 poise, the forming material has high viscosity and is not sufficiently permeated into the open pores of the sintered material.
