Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an inexpensive crucible with a low coefft. of thermal expansion and a superior heat insulating property for growing an oxide single crystal with a high m.p. by coating the surface of a crucible made of refractory such as alumina with a metal such as iridium.
CONSTITUTION: The whole surface or the inside of a crucible 2 made of refractory such as alumina, zirconia or boron nitride is coated with a metal such as iridium, platinum, rhodium or molybdenum to manufacture a crucible for growing an oxide single crystal. Since the thickness of the metal is only about 100μm, the crucible is obtd. at a low cost. The thick-walled part of the crucible is made of refractory, so a superior heat insulating property is provided, and the constitution of the refractory is simplfied. The crucible has a low coefft. of thermal expansion. Accordingly, the resulting single crystal is not cracked, and the crucible itself is not damaged.
