Abstract

PURPOSE:To securely obtain depth information even if a luminance level smoothly changes such as a natural moving image by detecting directions in which the luminance levels change largest as characteristic quantities and detecting corresponding points based on the characteristic quantities. CONSTITUTION:Plural image pickup devices, characteristic quantity detection circuits PRER, PREC, PREL, 43R, 43C and 43L, a corresponding point detection circuit 47 and a depth map generation circuit 60 are provided. Namely, the directions where the luminance levels change largest with respect to the fine area of a picked up image are detected as the characteristic quantities DFR, DFC, DFL based on image data DAR, DAC and DAL, and the corresponding points are detected based on said quantities whereby parallax data DF0-DF5 are obtained. Thus, depth information DF(n) can securely be obtained even if an object to be measured is a natural body.
