Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the deposition of dendritic metal crystal on a negative electrode and to make it possible to manufacture a battery without use of an inactive gas atmosphere by forming at least one electrode with specific graphitized carbon fibers. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode and/or a negative electrode are/is formed with graphitized carbon fibers of 0.1-3mum in diameter in which carbon cross section is oriented in a cone or a pyramid at an inclination angle of 2-45 deg. against the fiber axis. For example, this carbon fiber is obtained in such a way that a mixture of benzene and hydrogen sulfide is thermally decomposed in a gas phase at 1100 deg.C to prepare carbon fibers having a diameter of 0.5-1.5mum and a length of 0.1-2mm, then the carbon fiber obtained is heated at 2400 deg.C. A battery assembled with the electrode takes the substance deposited by charge in the graphite layer and it is released as ions during discharge. The dendritic metal crystal does not deposit on the negative electrode and the battery can be manufactured without use of an inactive gas atmosphere.
