Abstract

PURPOSE:To discriminate a character without erroneous discrimination, by inputting two picture element data, which are in positions symmetrical with respect to the center line, to a feature extracting circuit which outputs the output in case of the existence of a picture in one prescribed data and discriminating a character pattern based on the output of the feature extracting circuit. CONSTITUTION:Two picture element data in positions symmetrical with respect to a center line 6 are successively taken out and are inputted to a feature extracting circuit 7. This feature extracting circuit 7 consists of an inverting circuit 8 and an AND circuit 9. That is, a character as the discrimination object is segmented and picture data of only the character is inputted to the feature extracting circuit 7 with the center line 6, which is vertical or horizontal in accordance with features of the form of the character, as the center, and the output value is used as a feature value, and this feature value is used for distinction between characters having the high degree of resemblance. Thus, features of characters which are apt to be erroneously discriminated are easily extracted and they are accurately discriminated.
