Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the direction of a parting line to be surely decided by making the size of the separate payment marks detected from the object to be read constant and subjecting the same to vignetting processing then calculating the resemblance degrees with standard patterns. CONSTITUTION:When postal matter corresponds to the read part of character directions, that postal matter is read and scanned by said read part and the output thereof is supplied to a character direction discriminating circuit 20. The separate payment mark is detected in a separate payment mark detecting circuit 21. This detected mark is made into a constant size by a normalizing circuit 22, and is subjected to vignetting processing in a vignetting circuit 23, thence it is applied to the 1st resemblance degree claculating circuit 25, and the 2nd resemblance degree calculating circuit 27. In the circuits 25, 27, the respective resemblance degrees of the applied separate payment mark with the patterns of the 1st standard pattern memory 24 and the 2nd standard pattern memory 26 are calculated. A comparator 28 decides that the recording direction of postal code is lateral writing in a vertical position when the calculation result of, for example, the circuit 25 is larger than the calculated result of the circuit 27. The decision result of the circuit 28 is supplied to a character recognizing part through a threshold decision circuit 29.
