Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sintered material having low boundary abrasion, etc., by producing a sintered material composed of a silicon-containing compound and a matrix of an Al-containing compound and heating and oxidizing the sintered material to form a coating film of a compound oxide containing Al and Si on the surface. CONSTITUTION:(A) Powder of Al2O3, AlN or aluminum oxynitride is mixed with (B) powder or whisker of SiC, powder or whisker of Si3N4, powder of a metal silicide or powder of solid solution of the above components. The obtained mixture is formed, oxidized at 900-1,200 deg.C and sintered in a non- oxidizing atmosphere at 1,550-1,900 deg.C to obtain a sintered material consisting of 70-85vol.% of a matrix composed mainly of the component A and the remaining part of the component B. The sintered material is oxidized in air or in an oxidizing gas at 900-1,600 deg.C to cover the surface of the sintered material with a coating film of a compound oxide containing Al and Si. The titled sintered material suitable for cutting tool can be produced by this process.
