Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sintered material useful for industrial tools and wear-resistant parts, composition high toughness and high strength, by blending SiC whiskers with (partially stabilized) ZrO2 powder and TiC powder in a specific ratio, molding and sintering. CONSTITUTION:3-45vol.% SiC whiskers having 0.8-1mum diameter and 20-200 aspect ratio is blended with 5-40vol.% ZrO2 powder or partially stabilized ZrO2 powder stabilized with 2mol.% Y and the rest of TiC powder to give raw material powder. Then the raw material powder is kneaded with by a ball mill, dried and molded by press molding, etc., to give a molded article. Then the molded article is sintered at 1,800-2,300 deg.C for >=30min by pressurizing sintering method to give a TiC/SiC whisker/ZrO2 complex sintered material having >=about 95% density and <=about 3mum crystal particle size.
