Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable the AC driving within the safety area of the dielectric strength, and to improve the service life of EL elements by making the absolute value of the positive voltage smaller than the absolute value of the negative voltage when a pulse-form AC voltage is applied between a transparent electrode and a rear side electrode, and making the both values lower than the dielectric strength value of the EL element. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode 2 (about 2000Angstrom ) of the material of ITO is formed on a glass plate substrate 1 (about 2mm) in a vacuum evaporation or a spattering, and then the first insulating layer (about 8000Angstrom ) of the material if BaTiO3 to prevent the dielectric breakdown, a luminous layer 4 (about 6000Angstrom ) of the material adding a luminous center consisting of Mn in the basic material of ZnS, the second insulating layer 5 (about 8000Angstrom ) of the material of HfO2, and the rear side electrode 6 (about 2000Angstrom ) of the material of Al which has the reflection property facing the transparent electrode 2, are laminated and formed in this order in a vacuum evaporation, a spattering, and the like, and by applying an AC voltage between the transparent electrode 2 and the rear side electrode 6, the luminous layer is illuminated and shines up through the substrate 1. In such a composition, the dielectric strength shown in the applied voltage between the transparent electrode 2 and the rear side electrode 6 is, V+ is about 160V, V- is about 250V, and the AC driving in the safety area is made possible.
