Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain composite ceramics having superior toughness, strength and heat resistance by mixing an inorg. compd. with Si particles, molding the mixture and heating the molded body in a nitriding atmosphere to form whiskers between particles of the resulting sintered body and to bond the particles together. CONSTITUTION:An inorg. compd. such as oxide, carbide, nitride, oxynitride, boride or silicide, e.g. TiN or Si3N4 is mixed with Si particles for forming whiskers and the mixture is molded. The molded body is heated in a nitriding atmosphere to form whiskers between particles of the resulting sintered body and to three-dimensionally bond the particles together with the whiskers. Thus, composite ceramics which is a sintered body consisting or an inorg. compd. and Si nitride and having <=30% porosity is obtd. The ceramics is preferably used as material of structural parts such as engines and turbines and in an aeronautical field, etc.
