Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease crosstalks and to obtain a large-area display and high- resolution display by laminating a coloring and decoloring material which is colored and decolored by an electrochemical oxidation reduction reaction and an electrolyte layer which is increased in electrical conductivity by heating. CONSTITUTION:The solid electrochromic layer 5 consisting of the coloring and decoloring material which is colored and decolored by the electrochemical oxidation reduction reaction and the electrolyte layer 6 which contains a supporting electrolyte and is increased in the electrical conductivity by heating are laminated and electrodes 3, 4 are formed on both faces. Namely, the electrolyte layer 6 exhibits the electrical conductivity only when the layer is heated and, therefore, the electrochromic layer 5 exhibits the coloring and decoloring behavior by the electrochemical oxidation reduction reaction when the layer is subjected simultaneously to both of the heating and the impression of current, by which images and characters, etc., are displayed. The crosstalks are thereby decreased even with the simple matrix and the large-area display and high resolution display are obtd.
