Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical shutter in which leakage light does not occur by impressing voltages whose polarities are different on both electrodes of the optical shutter made of material having an electrooptical effect and, thereafter, synchronously discharging charges which are charged with the voltages impressed on the respective electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Data is transmitted to a shift register 13 and latched in a latch circuit 14. And the data is transmitted to a shutter driving circuit 11 and the pulse of the driving voltage Vd2 is impressed on the individual electrode 3 of the optical shutter 1. Meanwhile, the pulse of negative bias voltage -Vb is impressed on a common electrode 2 from a bias driving circuit 12 synchronously with the pulse of the driving voltage Vd2 so that the optical shutter 1 on which the driving voltage Vd2 is impressed is driven to transmit light. Next, the charges which are charged with the negative bias voltage -Vb impressed on the common electrode 2 are discharged synchronously with the discharge of the charges which are charged with the driving voltage Vd2 impressed on the optical shutter 1. Thus, the leakage light does not occur and the image of good contrast can be obtained.
