Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to monitor the state highly reliably by a simple method, by inserting optical fiber into, e.g., a thin metal tube along the approximately entire length, and measuring the temperature of an arbitrary point of the metal tube. CONSTITUTION:Laser light 2, which is emitted from a laser oscillator 1, is inputted into an optical fiber 5, which is housed in an optical cable 4. The fiber 5 is enclosed in a thin metal tube 9 along the approximately entire length. A thermocouple 14 is attached to a part of the outer surface part of the tube 9. The outputs is sent to a control part 16, which is accommodated in the oscillator 1 through an amplifier 15. When deterioration is yielded at a part of the fiber 5, scattered light from the fiber 5 is rapidly increased, and the temperature at this part is also increased rapidly. The scattered light and the temperature are also rapidly increased at the part, where the thermocouple is attached. Namely, even if the deterioration is local, the entire fiber 5 is affected. Therefore, the output of the thermocouple 14 is rapidly changed. The control part 16, which has received the rapid output change, stops the laser oscillation immediately and issues an alarm as required.
