PURPOSE:To improve the quality of an image, by installing a correction means for modulating a modulation clock in terms of time with pulses in inverse proportion to main scanning speed and controlling a semiconductor laser driving means so that an output from a semiconductor laser is made to be proportioned to the main scanning speed. CONSTITUTION:In a laser beam scanning optical system where the main scanning speed is not equal, the modulation clock signal with which the semiconductor laser driving means 11 drives the semiconductor laser 1 is controlled to be modulated in terms of time with the pulses in inverse proportion to the main scanning speed by the correction means 14 so that the modulation clock is made short and a laser output time or period is shortened according to the main scanning speed. Since the correction means 14 controls the output from the semiconductor laser 1 so as to be in proportion to the main scanning speed, the laser output can be raised according to the main scanning speed. Then, an exposing state equivalent to the case where the main scanning speed is constant can be obtained even if the scanning speed varies. Thus, the image of good quality can be formed.
