Abstract

PURPOSE:To uniformize the orientation state and thickness of a liquid crystal by pressurizing a laminated body contg. a ferroelectric liquid crystal as an intermediate layer in the temp. region where said liquid crystal exhibits an isotropic liquid phase and releasing the pressure in said temp. region. CONSTITUTION:The ferroelectric liquid crystal 2 is applied by a printing method on one of two sheets of substrates 1 provided with electrodes and liquid crystal orienting means. A sealing material 3 and spacer are formed on the other thereof and both the substrates 1 are laminated, then the seal 3 is cured. The laminated body mentioned above is then held in place between steel plates 4 preheated to the temp. region where the liquid crystal 2 exhibits the isotropic liquid phase. While this laminated body is kept pressurized under a prescribed pressure, the laminated body is held for a desired period of time at the above-mentioned temp. The pressure is in succession removed and the excess liquid crystal flowing out of a sealing aperture 6 of the laminated body is removed. After the aperture 6 is sealed, the laminated body is cooled down to room temp. Interposition of elastic sheets between the plates 4 and the laminated body is also possible.
