Abstract

PURPOSE:To uniformize the electromagnetic conversion characteristics and magnetic characteristics in a transverse direction by specifying the position of a discharge port connected to a vacuum evacuation device. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 2 is conveyed in the central position of a cylindrical can 5 which is the support for the substrate 2 and the transverse mid-point of the substrate 2 passes the AA' line on the center line of the can 5 in an apparatus for producing a magnetic recording medium by flying a magnetic material 9 on the nonmagnetic substrate 2 and forming a magnetic layer thereon. The position of the discharge port 22 is so selected that the central point of the discharge port 22 exists on the AA' line. The flow of a reactive gas is symmetrical with the AA' line and the position of the discharge port 22 is likewise symmetrical therewith so that the reactive gas is uniformly discharged at the time of film formation. The magnetic layer formed is, therefore, uniform and has the uniform electromagnetic conversion characteristics.
