CONSTITUTION:A control rod 3 contains numerous neutron absorbing rod elements 5 in its protective tube 6. The element 5 has a constitution of thick walled tubes made of a neutron absorbing element 5 consisting of a tantalum and a neutron moderating material 8 of hydrogenated zirconium pellets filled in the tubes and thereafter the tubes are inserted into a stainless steel cladding tube 9. Therewith, a swelling is reduced significantly and also a reactivity value of a control rod increased because the hydrogenated zirconium moderates fast neutrons down to the energy region where the tantalum shows its enough absorption cross section. A reactivity value of a control rod is expressed as rho2-rho1=(k2-k1)/k2k1, where a reactivity rho: rho=(keff-1)/keff, keff: an effective multiplication factor, a reactivity rho1 before a control rod being inserted into the core: rho1(keff=k1) and a reactor reactivity rho2 after a control rod being inserted into the core: rho2(keff=k2).
