Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable measurement of viscosity of a small amount of a liquid sample, by placing a sample liquid into a cell to measure an oscillation frequency of a crystal resonator in contact therewith. CONSTITUTION:A crystal resonator 1 is a device utilizing piezoelectric effect and is connected to an oscillation circuit 4 through a cell 2 to cause a mechanical vibration. Though very small, the vibration causes a shearing stress between the surface of a liquid and the resonator 1 in contact with the liquid and the force thereof balances a force with the vibration of the resonator 1 as elastic body. Hence, a difference between an oscillation frequency when a liquid does not exist and that when the liquid gets in contact with the resonator is in a logarithmic relationship with viscosity. Thus, the viscosity of a sample liquid can be measured from a calibration curve predetermined by obtaining a value of the oscillation frequency.
