Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain comparatively fine silica gel suitable for chromatography, having high purity and narrow particle size distribution when the silica sol obtd. by reacting water glass with sulfuric acid is gelatinated by holding the silica sol under a specified condition. CONSTITUTION:The water glass is reacted with sulfuric acid to produce acidic silica sol, thereafter, Glauber's salt is deposited by cooling and removed, and the obtd. sol is stirred in a nonpolar liq. medium to form corpuscular droplet. Then, the droplet is gelatinized with ammonia. It is suitable that the acidic silica sol is produced as sol having 1-4pH and that the temp. for cooling the sol is about -1-5 deg.C. Besides, nonionic surface-active agent such as polyethylenglycol fatty acid ester, and one or more kinds among benzene, toluene and kerosine are used as surface-active agent and nonpolar liq. medium, respectively.
