Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an electrodeless circuit breaker which has a high lifetime and easy maintenance by arranging a superconductor between normally- conducting conductors, and electrically connecting them to form an electric current breaking section. CONSTITUTION:A title device is comprised of a high-temperature superconductor 2 which is arranged between and connected to normally-conducting conductors 1, a coil 4 for generating a strong magnetic field which is provided extanally of the superconductor 2, an exciting device for the coil 4, and a cooling medium loop 6 for the high-temperature superconductor 2. The electric current having flowed into one normally-conducting conductor 1 passes through the high- temperature superconductor 2 and flows out to the other normally-conducting conductor 1. At the time of electric current breaking, the exciting device 5 is rapidly operated to excite the coil 4 for generating a strong magnetic field in pulses and apply a stronger magnetic field than the critical magnetic field to the high-temperature superconductor 2 for quenching it, whereby the supercon ductor 2 is made to change to an electrically insulating substance to break the circuit current. A high lifetime is a chieved in this circuit breaker having no electrode, and the maintenance becomes extremely easy.
