Abstract
PURPOSE:To easily produce the shaft of a universal joint at a low cost by subjecting a machined shaft to carburization or carbonitridation hardening and tempering to form adequate metallic structure on the surface layer of the shaft part and subjecting this shaft to work hardening by needle rollers, etc. CONSTITUTION:The cruciform shaft 2 of the universal joint is machined from a stock such as round bar. End faces 6 of shaft parts 4, rolling faces 8, sealing faces 10, oil holes 12, oil sumps 14, a grease nipple mounting hole 16, etc., are formed to this shaft. The cruciform shaft 2 is then subjected to the carburization hardening and tempering or carbonitridation hardening and tempering. The metal structure of the surface layer of this shaft part 4 is thereby composed of 5-35% austenite and the balance the tempered martensite. The fits of the shaft part 4 surfaces to the mating members are thus obtd. and the face pressure is lowered. The sliding of the end faces 6, the sealing faces 10, etc., and the rolling surfaces 8, etc., are adequately subjected to the work hardening by sliding members such as bearing caps and rolling members such as needle rollers. The cruciform shaft 7 is thus obtd. by the simplified process for production.
