Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the efficiency of energy conversion by making the total length, in the direction parallel to the external magnetic field, of flow passages for generating a generator action smaller than the total length in the same direction of flow passages for generating a pumping action. CONSTITUTION:In an electromagnetic flow coupler, the tube walls of flow passages 1 and 2 on the sides for generating generator and pumping actions respectively, are composed of good conductor and an insulating material 3 is provided on the inner surfaces of side walls of respective flow passages 1, 2. An external magnetic field 4 is applied by a permanent magnet 18 to both passages 1-2 in the direction perpendicularly intersecting to the flow. When a conductive fluid in the passage 1 on the side for generating a generator action is forcibly made to flow from the outside in the shown direction of the arrow 5, a downward electromotive force is generated so that an electric current 7 flows and a driving force acts on the conductive fluid in the passage 2. In this case, the length L and the magnetic field strength B of the passages 1 and 2 are made equal, and the passage width is set as bG/bP=aG/aP<1. In this manner, an apparatus operates as an electromagnetic flow coupler.
