Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform the KATAKANA (square form of Japanese syllabary) retrieval processing without increasing the number of dictionary records for presence/absence of a long vowel, by recognizing characters including a long- vowel character as one word of KATAKANA expression if the first character of following characters is the long-vowel character. CONSTITUTION:KATAKANA words are registered in a word dictionary 3, and a word like 'data' which optionally has the long-vowel character in the ending is registered as the expression which has not the long-vowel character in the ending. In case of a word like 'show' which is fixed as the expression where the long-vowel character is added in the ending, the word is registered as the expression where the long-vowel character '-' is added in the ending. When a Japanese character string including KATAKANA expression is inputted from an input character string 1, a retrieving device 2 checks whether the first character is KATAKANA or not. If it is KATAKANA as the result of check, it is checked whether the character just after the retrieved word is the long-vowel character '-' or not, and characters ending with the long-vowel character are recognized as one word if it is the long-vowel character '-'.
