PURPOSE:To eliminate the repeated retrieval to shorten the retrieval time, by outputting specific information when words coincident with an input character code string are not detected and by detecting a word in a storage device which has the most longest components coincident with the input character code string. CONSTITUTION:Words consisting of character code strings and information corresponding to respective words are stored in an input character code string storage part 1, and respective words are stored in a word storage device 2, and the coincidence between words from this device 2 and the character code string from the storage device 1 is discriminated by a discriminating part 3. A word having the beginning coincident with that of an input character code string and consisting of a maximum number of characters coincident with the input character code string is retrieved by this discriminating part 3. A maximum length coincidence storage part 7 is connected to the discriminating part 3, and specific information to designate a word, which has the largest value of M, out of words, which coincide with the input character code string partially from the first character to the Mth character when the number of characters is denoted as N, is given to each word in the storage part 1 and is stored.
