Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy of measuring the speed of a high-speed moving object by detecting the time from the start position of horizontal scanning by sampling of the image of the moving object to the scanning position of the object image at every two times of the continuous horizontal scanning. CONSTITUTION:A video camera 2 is disposed to the position where the moving object 1 passes. The camera outputs the video image by the horizontal and vertical scanning of the optical image to the image pickup plane of the object 1. The camera 2 is so installed that the moving direction of the object 1 is in parallel with the horizontal scanning direction of the image pickup plane of the camera 2. In addition, the object having a straight shape in the vertical scanning direction is used as the object. A time measuring instrument 3 applies the time tn detected from the start position of the horizontal scanning to the scanning position of the object to a signal computing element 4. A horizontal scanning period t0, the magnification 1/M of the camera 2 and the length Z0 in the horizontal direction of the image pickup plane are applied as constants from a constant setter 5 to the computing element 4 which computes the speed of the object 1. The measurement with the high accuracy is thus enabled and the speeds over a wide range are measurable.
