Abstract

PURPOSE:To diagnose the dielectric breakdown of a power cable on the basis of the time characteristic of a DC component, by detecting the DC component from the charge current flowing between the lower voltage side of the secondary winding of a charging AC transformer and the earth in such a state that the high voltage side of said secondary winding is connected to the conductor of the power cable. CONSTITUTION:A charging AC transformer 1 insulated from the earth is connected to a power cable 100 being an object to be measured and a DC component detector 4 is inserted between the low voltage side of the secondary winding thereof and the earth to detect the DC component among the charge currents I2, I3, I4, I5, I6 flowing to the earth from the low voltage side of the secondary winding and the polarity, magnitude and time characteristic of the detected component are analyzed. On the basis of the analytical result, the presence, magnitude and generating direction of the water tree in the cable insulator are discriminated to judge whether the use of the power cable must be continued.
