Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve excellent abrasion resistance and workability by employing ferrous material containing carbon, chromium, molybdenum and banadium with specific ratio for forming a piston ring. CONSTITUTION:A piston ring in an internal combustion engine, an oil ring for example, is constructed with an oil ring body 1 and a coil spring 2. The oil ring body 1 is formed of ferrous material containing 0.4-0.6wt.% of carbon, 16-19wt.% of chromium, 0.5-2.0wt.% of molybdenum and 0.03-0.20wt.% of banadium. A hard surface treating layer is applied at least onto the face of the oil ring body 1 composed of such material sliding with the cylinder wall. Consequently, a piston ring having excellent abrasion resistance and workability can be obtained.
