Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve resistances to abrasion and scuffing by a method wherein the steel gas seal piston ring for an internal-combustion engine is formed by steel containinig specified constituents and is provided with a soft nitrided layer having specified thickness and surface hardness on the outer surface thereof. CONSTITUTION:The steel gas seal piston ring for the internal-combustion engine is constituted so as to suffice the conditions described hereunder; (1) the steel contains 0.55-1.40% of C and 12.0-19.0% of Cr in weight %, (2) the outer surface including at least the sliding surface thereof is provided with the soft nitrided layer, (3) the thickness of the nitrided layer is 5mu-30mu and the surface hardness thereof is HV900-HV1500. According to this method, the effect of the steel utilized for said piston may be improved by providing the soft nitrided layer and resistances to abrasion and scuffing, further, resistances to heat and fatigue or the like, may be improved.
