Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve a durability of a combined piston ring and compression ring by a method wherein a sliding surface of a side rail in a combined oil ring and another sliding surface of another ring are applied with a specified wearproof treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Combined oil rings made of steel which are positioned between the cylinder inner wall 1 and the ring groove 4 of the piston 3 are composed of a pair of upper and lower side rails 5A, 5B, and a spacer expander 7 axially spaced apart from these side rails 5A, 5B and pushed against the cylinder inner wall 1. In this case, both inner and outer circumferential surfaces of the upper and lower side rails 5A, 5B are plated by chromium 6A, 6A', 6B, 6B', and the outer surface of the expander 7 is processed with soft nitriding treatment (not shown). At the outer circumferential surface (sliding surface) of the compression ring 8 arranged in another ring groove 4' of the piston 3 is formed a ferro-chromium metallizing layer 10.
