Abstract

PURPOSE:To facilitate switching of compression ratio by forming a cylinder at the end portion of a connecting rod where a piston is coupled, and containing a plunger for hydraulically pushing the piston slidably upward in the cylinder. CONSTITUTION:An eccentric bearing 16 splitted in the center into two is placed between a cylindrical piston pin 15 having opposite ends 15a born in pin holes 11a of a piston 11 and a bearing hole 14 formed at small end portion 13 of a connecting rod 12. A cylinder 18 having one end opened to the bearing hole 14 is formed axially at the inside of the small end portion 13 of the shaft section 17 of the connecting rod 12, then a bottomed cylindrical plunger 19 is contained slidably therein and energized upward through a spring 20. Hydraulic pressure for pushing the plunger 19 upward while resisting against the spring 20 is fed from a hydraulic circuit 23 into the cylinder 16 so as to vary the height of the top face of piston with respect to the connecting rod 12 thus varying compression ratio.
