Abstract

PURPOSE:To attain uniformly the smooth polishing of an entire width-wise surface with high efficiency by clamping a metal strip with polishing rolls, using the strip as a cathode and the rolls as anodes and conducting a polishing process with an electrolyte fed between the strip and the roll, and electric current supplied. CONSTITUTION:A steel strip 1 is charged to an anode via a conductor roll 2, and polishing rolls 4 and 5 are charged to a cathode. An electrolyte is supplied from a spray header 7 to a gap between the rolls 4 and 5. And the electrified body 1 is subjected to a uniform complex polishing process of both mechanical polishing and electrolysis in respect of both surface layers concurrently ranging over an entire area in a width-wise direction, when passing between the rolls 4 and 5. The rolls 4 and 5 are symmetrically positioned vertically and an allowable asymmetrical range is within 10% of a distance from the conductor roll 2. And the rolls 4 and 5 are wired similarly from the terminal of the same rectifier 9 so as to have the same potential, and electrolytic current is 5A/dm<2> or more on the anode or the metal strip 1. Also, brush rolls or unwoven cloth rolls are used as the rolls 4 and 5, and the polishing rolls 4 and 5 impregnated with abrasives are used when it is desired to obtain a strong power for removing and smoothing a surface layer.
