Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (X<1> and X<2> are halogen; the substitution position of X<2> is 5 or 6; R<1> is formyl, carboxyl or lower alkoxycarbonyl; R<2> is H or lower alkyl). EXAMPLE:4-Bromo-5-iodo-3-indolecarbaldehyde. USE:It exhibits bactericidal action, antiviral action and plant growth promoting action by itself. Useful as pharmaceuticals such as antibacterial agent and antiviral agent, agricultural chemicals such as plant-growth promoting agent and herbicide or their intermediate or as production intermediates for various compounds having dihalogenoindole skeleton of the compound of formula I. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein R<1> is formyl can be produced e.g. by reacting a compound of formula II with thallium tristrifluoroacetic acid and reacting the resultant compound of formula III with a halide such as KI, cupric bromide or cupric chloride. The obtained compound can be converted into another compound of formula I wherein R<1> is other than formyl by oxidizing and esterifying the above compound.
