Abstract

PURPOSE:To lessen an increase in the propulsion resistance of a ship by the height of the reinforcement of weld of penetration beads by thermally spraying ceramics having a specific m.p. to the surface of a metallic base plate provided with a required width and depth to provide a thin film thereon, thereby controlling the height of the reinforcement of weld of the beads to a specific value. CONSTITUTION:The ceramics (ZrO2+CaO, etc.) having the m.p. (at least >=1700 deg.C) higher than the temp. of a weld metal is thermally sprayed to the front face side of a thin metallic film 2 (steel sheet, aluminum alloy sheet, etc.) having the groove of the width and depth required for formation of the penetration beads to form the thin film layer 3 sized about 0.5-1.5mm, by which the backing strip 1 is constituted. The shape of the grooves after the thermal spraying is adjusted to about 5-15mm groove width and about 2-3mm groove depth. Materials 4 to be welded are then mounted on the backing strip 1 and are subjected to one-side welding. The height of the reinforcement of weld of the penetration beads is thereby confined to at least 2-3mm, by which the increase in the propulsion resistance by the influence of the height of the reinforcement of weld on the outside surface of the hull of the ship is decreased.
