Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve strength and gas permeability to gases of a porous carbon material, by blending a mesocarbon spherule and/or graphitized product thereof used as aggregate with an organic particle substance and binder, molding the blend and then burning the moldings under inner atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A mesocarbon spherule and/or graphitized product thereof is blended with an organic particle substance and binder at a prescribed mixed ratio until uniform mixing is attained. Then the blend is molded by press molding and injection molding and heated in state of prescribed temperature and time to harden the binder. Further, successively the moldings are burned at a required temperature in inert atmosphere to form the porous carbon material. In the formation of the aimed material, the particle size is adjusted to the range of about 10W100μm. Since mesocarbon spherule and graphitized product thereof are both spherical aggregates, strength of the porous carbon material is improved. Since the pore size and porosity of the porous carbon material is uniform and have prescribed size, gas permeability thereof is improved.
