Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a molded body having superior activity, capable of being used over a long time, and undergoing no deterioration in the strength by joining fine grains of activated carbon together with a porous inorg. material and supporting the grains.
CONSTITUTION: A porous molded body is composed of an aggregate of fine grains 2 of activated carbon as the matrix and an inorg. material joining and supporting the grains, and it is formed into a honeycomb molded body A provided with many square cells (a) or other various shapes. In order to manufacture such a molded body, to fine grains of activated carbon is added sinterable inorg. powder, heat fusible glass powder or a mixture thereof. A thermally decomposable org. binder may be added. They are kneaded well, and the kneaded material is molded by extrusion and cutting in round slices, dried, and calcined in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. Thus, the powder of the materal 1 is sintered or fused together and exists among the matrix of the grains 2 in a three-dimensionally and irregularly continuous state to join and support the grains 2. Such a molded body is very porous, and by adding the org. binder, the porosity is increased furthermore.
