Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a cordierite honeycomb structure having excellent heat resistance and thermal shock resistance, by contriving to reduce coefficients of thermal expansion of axes A and B of conventional cordierite honeycomb structure.
CONSTITUTION: Talc having 5W100μm average particle diameter is blended with alumina having <2μm average particle diameter, high-purity amorphous silica having <15μm average particle diameter and other cordierite-forming raw materials in order to make a chemical composition of main components consisting of 42W56wt.% SiO2, 30W45wt.% Al2O3 and 12W16wt.% MgO, further kneaded with a plasticizer and an organic binder, extruded, molded, dried and then burnt at 1,350W1,440°C. A cordierite honey comb structure of small coefficient of thermal expansion having 30W42% porosity, ≤0.3×10-6/°C coefficient of thermal expansion in the direction of channel of honey comb structure at 400W800°C and ≤0.5×10-6/°C coefficient of thermal expansion in the direction perpendicular to the channel at 400W800°C.
