Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a honeycomb support having excellent thermal shock resistance when being used in gas pathway by a method in which the linear thermal expansion coefficient of ceramic honeycomb structures whose tubular paths are arranged in parallel and adjacently is made greater from the central axis toward outside.
CONSTITUTION: An organic binder is added to cordierite, silicone nitride, or a mixture powder of these, and the mixture is molded into a honeycomb structure by a known method. Then, a substance having a greater expansion coefficient than that of the said raw materials or whose expansion coefficient becomes greater when being baked is adhered to the molding in such a way that a greater amount of the substance is adhered in the peripheral area rather than the center of the molding. The said substance used includes Al2O3. Then, the molding is dried, calcined to remove the organic binder, and then baked to obtain objective thermal shock resistant honeycomb support having a high cracking resistance in its peripheral area when being used.
