Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily obtain the titled large-sized glass, having excellent homogeneity and useful as laser glass, etc., by adding a compound containing Se to a process for synthesizing glass by a sol-gel method, etc., specifying homogeneity per unit volume and synthesizing the glass. CONSTITUTION:One or more compounds containing Se (e.g. Se-containing halide) are added to a process for synthesizing a glass body containing one or more of steps (a)-(e) of (a) hydrolyzing an alkyl silicate in the presence of an acidic catalyst, (b) dispersing fine Si particles in a hydrolyzate solution, (c) adjusting the resultant Si dispersion to pH 3-6, (d) gelatinizing and drying the sol in the step (c) into a dry gel and (e) heating the dry gel and forming the glass body to synthesize the aimed glass body. The distribution of thermal strain and refractive index of a slice of a desired size of the resultant glass body is then measured to afford the aimed cerium-doped quartz glass having <=1X10<-5> homogeneity per unit volume.
